Celebrate Tradition

We recently had the opportunity to help a family celebrate a special day in the Japanese culture. Shichi-Go-San is recognized on November 15th and is a day of prayer for the healthy growth of kids. Seven year old, Sayaka, and her family invited us to share in their celebration by photographing this important day.

The festival is for three and five-year old boys and three and seven year-old girls. On this day, the children dress up in traditional kimonos or dresses and their parents take them to a shrine and have a prayer. Children may also be given toys and candies to celebrate.

Sayaka and her mother, Emi, wore beautiful, hand-made kimonos. Emi's was passed down from her mother and is over 50 years old. Sayaka's kimono was also worn by Emi's sister. Dad and little sister were dressed in their best for the celebration too.

This day was a wonderful experience for us and we were thrilled to help capture this special time in Sayaka's life. Thank you Emi, Kazuma, Sayaka, and little Ayano.
